We are currently looking for a motivated postdoctoral candidate with strong interest in interdisciplinary research in the area of synthetic biology at the interphase of chemistry and molecular biology. The project in particular involves the development of “Light controlled cell-cell contacts” as part of the ERC Starting Grant ARTIST (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/212072_en.html).
Specifically, we aim to control cell-cell interactions photochemically using proteins that respond to visible light as a reversible photoswitches. Cell-cell contacts are highly regulated during many biological processes including embryo development, wound healing and cancer development. Therefore, manipulating cell-cell interactions with the photoswitchable proteins will allow for control over cell contacts during such processes, making it possible to study intercellular processes such as collective cell migration and differentiation, and intracellular processes such as local cell-cell contact dynamics. Controlling cell-cell interactions with visible light is also attractive because light provides high spatial and temporal control, it is non-invasive and bio-orthogonal and also an important environmental signal. Such a platform will afford valuable insight into interactions between cells as well as synthetic surfaces and is applicable to the development of new bio-instructive materials.
Field of duties:
- Investigation of multicellular architectures
- Developing optogenetic tools for cell-cell adhesion
- Cell based assays (ELISA, Western blot, cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, image analysis)
- PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular biology or related fields with outstanding publication record
- High motivation, self-initiative and team-minded
- Good English skills
- Expertise in above mentioned tasks is advantageous
