PhD Students (f/m) in Cellular Virology

The University Hospital of Münster is one of the leading hospitals in Germany. Such a position cannot be achieved by size and medical successes alone. The individual commitment counts above all. We need your commitment so that even with little things we can achieve great things for our patients. There are many possibilities open for you so that you may develop with them.

The Institute of Cellular Virology, University Hospital of Muenster, Muenster, Germany offers two positions available from 01.04.2018 for 36 months with a potential extension for

Our research focuses on investigating host-pathogen interactions with a strong emphasis on the cell biological mechanisms. The successful applicant will investigate the molecular mechanisms on how small DNA tumor viruses infect cells. In particular, we study the interaction of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) with their host cells for invasion. This involves several, highly dynamic steps that occur in a surprisingly asynchronous manner. Therefore, we use high end live cell imaging techniques to study the dynamics and mechanism of HPV entry with an emphasis on the tumor-causing types such as HPV16. In this project that is financed within the SFB 1348, we focus on HPV16 receptor interactions, which are essential to induce signaling events leading to uptake of the virus by a novel endocytic mechanism. This process is complex and involves association with several cellular receptors. The first project aims to test whether receptor interactions occur sequentially, or whether a complex is being formed. The second project aims to identify the molecular players and mechanisms involved in promoting vesicle formation during virus endocytosis. For this state-of-the-art live cell and superresolution microscopy methods in combination with virological and cell biological techniques will be employed.

Required qualifications:

  • MSc in Biology/Cell Biology/Virology or similar
  • background in cell biology or virology

  • ideally experience with live cell imaging, superresolution microscopy, molecular imaging and/or computational image analysis;
  • strong motivation for research and interdisciplinary approaches

We offer:

  • an international, young and dynamic working group
  • research laboratories with state of the art equipment
  • excellent possibilities for career development
